Narrative theories

Noel Carroll's philosophy theory on horror, it uses three structures of a horror film that are always portrayed.
  •  The onset phrase where a monster/disorder is created.

  •  The discovery phase where the monster/disorder is discovered.

  •  The disruption phase, where the characters remove/destroy the monster and everything is fine.

Todorov's narrative theory uses the equilibrium, the disequilibrium and the new equilibrium. This is very similar to Carroll's theory because it goes through the three stages of a horror film.

Enigma codes are questions to the audience which are then answered shortly after or later on in the film. For example, who is she/he? Where are they going? Why would they do that? They're also questions that get the audience to get intrigued with the film and wanting to find out the answers to these questions, therefore watching more of it. Enigma codes grab the audience and make them want to watch the rest of the film as they are more curious as to what will happen next.
